MTN Liberia Music Awards Highlights Potential of Liberian Music Industry
It’s been almost a week since the first ever MTN Liberia Music Awards (MLMA) was hosted in Liberia. At no surprise, though, throughout the week, details of the event seized social media feeds across the internet, with people taking to their accounts to discuss their favorite segments of the event, as well as the winners. As the first award show sponsored by Lonestar Cell MTN in an effort to intensify the company’s robust support to the growing Liberian music industry, the 2018 MLMA focused greatly on more local acts/artists. Although it was the first time the event was hosted in Liberia after being in the USA, it was a great showcase of the immense potential and talents that exists within the entire Liberian entertainment industry.
Hosted by Radio talk show host, Rickslyn Myers, and socialite extraordinaire, Robbie Hoff, the night of the MLMA was a night of entertainment, celebration of arts, bold fashion choices, and of course, music. With over 13 winners taking home awards in 15 categories, it was an incredible night for Liberian talents who have contributed to the widespread of Liberian music this year. 2018 was a significant year in the history of Liberian entertainment, with the stakes higher now more than it’s ever been. More young people are turning to the music/entertainment industry as a let-out for their talents. As such, the hosting of an award show like the MLMA plays an important role in the proliferation of Liberian music and talents, as it appreciates artists for their hard work, and lets them know that fans are paying attention to their respective sounds.
While the focus of the show was on Liberian talents, the show was headlined by Ghanaian artist, Kuami Eugene. The Angela singer was welcome to Liberia is great style, as other super stars and attendants at the show danced and sang along during his short performance. Eugene, who was nominated in the show’s best international artist category, fell short to Nigeria’s Davido, however, Liberians made sure to remind him how much he is loved through their energy during his performance.
On the other hand, among the local performers were some of Liberia’s biggest names in music; including, DenG, Kobazzie the Lorma Boy, Jaredo, and one of the country’s youngest superstars, Ziggy Ray. While it was a highly competitive year in Liberian music, fans were opportune by Lonestar Cell MTN to vote for their favorite artists and talents, of whom emerged a few winners, with Lonestar Cell MTN Brand Ambassador, C.I.C being the most awarded artist of the night.
With such an incredible initiative by the Lonestar Cell MTN team in expanding their support for the growth of local Liberian industries, the current and potential impact their focus on music/entertainment through the 2018 MTN Liberia Music Awards is apparent. As such, it is exciting to see where else the company will expand their commitment. Until then, here are photos from the award show held Saturday, December 22, 2018, in Monrovia, Liberia.
