Walking through the streets of Monrovia, I sometimes wonder what life might’ve been like for those who walked before me. Gazing up at the light blue skies of Nimba County, wild bush thorns grazing my skin as I stride in my mother’s footsteps toward our family’s village; I wonder what life was like for her as a girl, her mother as a girl, her mother’s mother, and all the mothers who paved the way on which we walked. What were their dreams? Did they also playfully wander the lands, staring into the sky dazed as they tried to make shapes of the clouds? What occupied their minds during those dazed moments? Did it ever occur to them that the future carrier of their blood-stained sacrifices would be here, in this moment, reflecting on their dreams? What were those dreams? These are some of the thoughts accessory brand, Myeonway Designs, have inspired with their latest SS19 collection, “To Catch a Dream”.
Created by Wilhelmina Myeonway Cooper, Myeonway Designs has grown to become a leading handbag/accessory brand operating, and hand-crafted by local artisans in Liberia. The brand has made a name for itself over the years with its colorful, authentic, bold, and creatively crafted designs.
Not one to shy away from bold prints, Myeonway’s SS19 collection lookbook dreams of a self-realized Liberia that is synchronized with the movements and textures of its foremothers and forefathers. The collection breaths life into the idea that the wearers of the bags are paying ode to what our ancestors would want, and that is to remain true to the individually woven threads of our beings. These uniquely colored and fabricated threads are what sets each of us apart from the world. It is also what sets apart the artistic brilliance behind the Myeonway’s Designs brand. It is indeed, our ancestor’s wildest dreams. Continue below to view a portion of the collection.
