The Liberian Entertainment Awards (LEA) has released its 2019 hip-hop cypher featuring some incredible artists based in Liberia. Like they do yearly, the cypher brought together top artists killing the Liberian rap game, from trapco, to hipco, to le sweet sweet Kolo (Koloqua). Of the eight rappers featured in this year’s cypher, the brabee den brought their serious A-game, but one in particular struck us the coldest. Lets keep reading to find out who.
This year’s cypher features an exciting lineup with Tan Tan B, JB Soul fresh, Cozea Kamikazee, Boima The Ace, Chiller Coolnanee, LIB Icey, Abi Porte, and Revoluxon. The star-studded lineup is filled with perfectly great rappers, but of course, some stars shine brighter than others. With some exciting bars, the verses that stuck out most to us came from the legend JB Soul Fresh, and newbie trapco wonder, Revoluxon.
With Kunta on the production, DJ Nelly delivered a sick track for the lineup. While there are some exciting bars from the stars, the entire cypher falls a bit flat. Like the previous years, there are no women featured in the lineup, despite there being some incredible female talents in the Liberian rap game. Likewise, some of the bars felt disconnected from the cultural and societal issues in the country. Not much differentiated it from the previous cyphers, or even American hip-hop style, which was a bit disappointing.
In comparison, one cypher that gave all of these personalities was the 2016 LEA Cypher featuring Bucky Raw. His viral verse secured his place in Liberian rap because he told his story as a Liberian, spoke his native language, and connected to Liberians around the world through rap. This year, the artist that came closest to that performance was Revoluxon, who continues to solidify his place as a trapco revolutionary with every song release. We are excited to see where next he will go, and how he and the others will continue to shape this year in Liberian rap/entertainment.
