As many of you who have been following my skincare journey are aware, I am a sucker for natural and organic products as the foundation of my skincare routine. As such, I have tried many different affordable products, as well as creating my own DIY products every now and then. In my times of trials, some products have been great, some not so great, while others have been excellent! Some of those that I have found to be excellent are the Kernel Fresh products, by J-Palm Liberia.
Before I continue, I must include a disclaimer that this is not an ad, but a review of a few products by the brand that I have purchased and tried, and come to genuinely love. Let’s get right into it!
Palm Kernel Face, Body, and Hair Oil
Many Liberians are no strangers to the use of palm kernel oil. As children, our mothers were either using palm kernel (pankana) oil on our hair and skin, or shea butter (donut grease). Some of us even eat the unrefined oil with Liberian dry rice, or use it in other means of cooking. Needless to say, this oil is pivotal in Liberian beauty and foods, which is why when I discovered the Kernel Fresh refined kernel oil, I absolutely had to try. This was 4 years ago, and I have been hooked on it since, as the product has done wonders in improving the moisture in my skin!
Unlike coconut oil which stays on the surface of my skin, the kernel oil penetrates my otherwise dry skin, with one use in the morning carrying me throughout the entire day without need for reapplication, as I would if I used lotion or other oils. Likewise, unlike the raw shea butter, the kernel oil is more lightweight, and has a better fragrance. Combined used of the two with the shea butter in whipped form can give you optimum results in keeping your skin supple, healthy and glowing — especially if you are like me who suffer from seasonal flares of eczema and year-long dry skin. My only critique of this product is the packaging, as the oil solidifies in colder temperatures, and so it is a hassle to use without having to warm it in hot water first before each use.
Facial Exfoliating Scrub with Dead Sea salts, Kernel Oil, and Shea Butter
This product, I started using about two (2) weeks ago, and I must say, I’m very pleased with the results. Initially, I found the exfoliator a bit oily due to the infusion of both kernel oil and raw shea butter; however, I have since rearranged the steps in my skincare routine in a way that allows and accepts the product in its oily glory. By ending my cleansing routine with this exfoliating scrub, rather than beginning it with the scrub, I have found that it penetrates the layers of my skin with the moisturizing oils that is stripped away during the cleansing process, while at the same time cleansing and exfoliating. Use this product if you are like me with dry and combination skin and/or if you don’t have a product-intensive skincare routine.
Kernel Oil and Shea Butter Bar Soap
I know many people are ditching their bar soaps for body wash, but before jumping that wagon, just hear me out! I have always been a fan of both bar soaps and body wash. I use body wash on my body for my nighttime showers due to their high fragrance levels, but ensure to never use it on my face. For my morning shower routine, and to wash my face during my showers, I currently use the kernel fresh bar soap collection. I started using this product since it was introduced about 2 years ago, and have not looked back since, the soap leaves my body feeling clean and refreshed, without leaving a film of dryness over my skin, as would other bar soaps I have used like Dove of even Shea Moisture’s shea butter-infused bar soap. Additionally, the Kernel Fresh soap also works wonderfully in complete makeup removal when paired with my regular cleanser.
Moringa, Coconut, and Lemongrass Bar Soap
Like the kernel oil and shea butter soap, the moringa infused bar soap is also advertised as both a face and body soap. As I recently started using this soap about two (2) weeks ago, I found that it has worked wonderfully in brightening a patch of my skin left dark and dull due to an eczema flare up. Moringa is often referred to as Africa’s top beauty secret, and I’d have to agree. I use moringa in my morning beauty tea, and I sometimes cook with the leaves, so the infusion of the super plant into this soap sold me instantly. Like the other kernel fresh soap, my only critique of this is that it finishes rather quickly, so make sure to always keep it in a dry place when you are not showering with it, so as to get the most out of each product.
Of all the beauty products I have tried, from chemicals to natural and organic products, my favorite so far for my skincare foundation has to be the kernel fresh products by J-Palm. I have seen a tremendous and consistent improvement in my skin’s texture, shine, and complexion since I made the switch to the product, and I suggest you should too! What is even more wonderful about the brand is that is owned by a Liberian, and is made in Liberia, so it really can’t get any better than this.
